Assignment 1 (Case
Study)
Seventh Heaven
Molly took over
managing “Seventh Heaven”, a luxury six star resort that catered for wealthy
holiday makers and international corporate high flyers. The resort once had an unsurpassed reputation
for excellence in hospitality with its famous day spa, three restaurants, 18
hole golf course, and state of the art function centre. More recently however, Seventh Heaven had
been plagued by a number of customer complaints, and had problems retaining
staff. The staff complained of boredom,
and felt that their performance was not recognized by senior staff or by the
clientele. One employee (Sam) aspired to
be a future resort manager like Molly, however he felt he was never given the
opportunity to expand his skills. His
key role was in the reservations department, only dealing with new bookings and
general guest inquiries.
Around 12 months ago,
Seventh Heaven dismissed their HR Manager as part of cost-cutting. Since then,
the quality and coverage of HR functions has declined dramatically. Now little
effort is placed on staff retention and development. The former HR manager
recognized the value of employer branding and followed a rigorous recruitment
process; however given the Manager’s departure, these strategies have also
lapsed.
Now Seventh Heaven has
trouble attracting suitable applicants for vacant positions. The following is an example of a job
advertisement placed on Seventh Heaven’s website.
Attractive young
female blond needed to fill resort position.
Duties include taking accommodation inquiries, maybe the opportunity to
work elsewhere in the resort. Usual
hospitality working hours and conditions.
Only those with a suitable background need apply.
