As stated in the outline of assessment, you are required to present a series of critical reflections on materials consulted for Topics 1 and 2. I have listed the preferred materials below. You coverage should include materials from these 2 topics. You are advised to consider writing one reflection more in depth- say about 1,000 words on topic 2 – doping in sport, and two others totalling another 1,000 words (500 words each) on topic 1. One reflection must be a journal article * and no more than one reflection can be a relevant chapter from the textbook. Please use text book chapter 8 for your background on doping (topic 2) but use other resources for the rest.
If you wish to make a case to include at least one reflection from materials different to those listed below, you are of course welcome to contact me and state your case.
Advice on writing the reflections
You might consider the some of the following aspects, although their relevance and importance may vary.
In the case of a journal article you might consider what argument is being presented and how well the author makes his or her case. In the case of a comment on a court case, you might state what is the background or context of the case, what issues seemed most important in helping the court come to its decision, and what significance the case seems to have for sports management. In the case of legislation, you might state what problem or problems the legislation is trying to address and how successful it seems to have been in doing that. (Note: the word legislation includes the singular-one piece of legislation- and the plural-several laws passed by parliament or, in the case of the WADAC, by an NGO**).
In all cases you should indicate what you think are the major aspects you have learnt from the material in question, including perhaps where the topic is treated in the textbook some reflection on what deeper appreciation, if any, you have gained in reading more specialised material. For example, by reading the WADAC code itself you might comment on how much more you understand about the role of WADA in its efforts to eliminate doping in sport. In short, I am interested in the impact or impression the relevant materials and topics have made on you.
Referencing, quoting and expression:
For these first two assignments I am quite relaxed about referencing. For example, if you are discussing Anderson’s article and make a short quote just put, for example, after the quote “…..” (p.75), not the full title of the article or abbreviations like ibid etc. Any quotations you do use should be brief and rarely if at all exceed three sentences. You should write grammatically and spell accurately but you can be lively and direct. You may write- “I think that…..because ….” Or “In disagree with Anderson because …) rather than “in this writer’s opinion “or “at times it can seem that…”.
*For the purposes of this exercise I am happy to treat the book chapter by Jack Anderson in the E-Readings as a journal article. You may choose either that chapter or his more recent although overlapping article as listed below.
